Printed circuit boards, or PCBs, are used in a variety of industries, and their function includes connecting electronic components. You can have a variety of prototype PCBs designed and manufactured to meet your product or other manufacturing needs.
Prototype PCBs and Related Assemblies
In addition to basic PCBs, there are two additional types of related circuit assemblies. The first is the integrated circuit, which can be referred to as an IC or microchip, and the second is the hybrid circuit.
Legend Printing Methods
The legend is comprised of the following parts:
- Component designators
- Switch settings
- Test points
There are other indicators included, which can assist with the assemblage, testing, and service requirements for the prototype circuit board.
Depending upon the project needs, there are three printing methods for legends:
- Silk screen printing
- Liquid photo imaging
- Ink jet printing
Prototype PCB Assembly
PCBs are produced by circuitry interconnections that are etched into copper layers. Multiple layers, however, are required for complex circuits. Most rigid PCBs are produced using FR-4 glass epoxy for the primary insulating layer. During this process, a thin layer of copper foil is laminated to either one or both sides of the FR-4 panel.
Using framed stencils, which are pre-stretched, is a good idea when creating a large number of PCBs. Not only do they have smooth aperture walls, but they can be utilized for 16 Mil pitch and below. Furthermore, they may also be the recommend solution for Micro BGA”s.
Laminates consist of layers of cloth or paper. They are produced by a pressurized curing process with thermostat resin in order to achieve the desired, uniform thickness. These laminates can vary in size up to four-by-eight feet.
Initially, the temperature marker material for these laminates isn’t transparent. However, when heated to 413 degrees Fahrenheit, the material actually liquifies. At this stage, it becomes shiny and it’s important to note that this process can’t be reversed.
When attaching components to a PCB, different soldering techniques can be used. When engaged in high-volume production, for example, the soldering is usually handled with a SMT placement machine along with bulk-wave soldering. Reflow ovens may also be used.
