The oil and gas industry will never ‘arrive.’ There is a constant and ongoing need for both products and as the elements lessen around the world, the industry has to look harder and deeper to find what the world needs. It can be a rough industry to be involved in because of the instability of gas and oil. Sometimes things look up and at other times they are desperately low. The thing about needing to go in to different kinds of environments in order to look for oil and gas means that the need for knowledge and expertise also increases. There is a very high demand for skill and competences in this industry. Oil and gas training is very important because of the what is needed in the industry.
Jobs are not as prevalent as they once were, although they are not entirely closed off. However, short term employment for the oil and gas industry may be phased out entirely because of the uncertainty of the industry. Long term careers are still in good standing as there will always be a need for more energy. But because of having to phase out the short term employment workers, more will be expected of those who are making their career in the oil and gas industry. In order to stay employed in the oil and gas industry, the workers will probably have to go through oil and gas training programs to ensure that everyone is working properly and efficiently so that no unnecessary money is wasted.
Expertise
This is of course, the number one factor necessary in order to work in the gas and oil industry. Understanding how the entire field works is imperative. Even if you sit through the oil and gas training, if you don’t have prior knowledge of the oil and gas industry and how it functions, replenishes and runs itself, then you won’t be able to help the team when the time comes. Do your own research before even joining a company so that you can at least appear to know what it is all about. Do not try to ‘wing it’. Only serious and genuine applicants will even be considered.
Experience
While not a necessity, experience is definitely a plus when it comes to this industry. It can potentially be a fairly dangerous work environment and if you have already worked in the field for a time then that will be helpful to you. The danger is getting more real all the time as the workers have to delve into harsh and deep areas to search for gas and oil. Experience can help workers to know how to safely maneuver these areas. Having said that, a lot of people do enter into the industry though entry level positions but when this happens, having past experience in something like construction or electricity can help you to stand apart from the crowd as well.
Communication
Although important, skill and competence is not all that is necessary. If a worker knows exactly what he is doing but doesn’t know how to communicate with the rest of the team, he will not be much good to the industry. Communication is essential to putting the oil and gas training into action. You have to be able to talk through what it going on and sometimes describe it to someone not able to see. Communication keeps workers safe.
Education
Between the mechanical and technical jobs that are available both on and offshore, having a degree is something else that can make you stand out from the crowd. However, it can’t just be any degree. Engineer technology and construction management are two of the few degrees that will help your resume rise to the top of the pile. However, experience does, at times, take precedence over education, especially with how the industry is running now.
Having these requirements should help you even before going through oil and gas training, making you an even better worker than you thought you could be. The industry is a competitive one requiring hard working individuals that will give their all to the job and really believe in what they are doing.
