Google might be the biggest peddler of information on earth — so it’s easy to wonder how such a massive entity stores so much information. Are their data center racks and cabinets just like the ones we use — or do they have a special super-computer that has no equal anywhere in the world? What kind of data center service do they provide?
Server rack enclosure and computer racks enthusiasts everywhere got their answer recently, when Google uploaded a video to its YouTube channel that takes the viewer through a virtual tour of one of Google’s dozen or so data centers it has around the world. The Google data center Youtube video has already been viewed thousands of times by professional IT consulting professionals and run of the mill computer geeks alike.
According to a January 13 NetworkWorld article, the video of the data center site shows Joe Kava, vice president of Google’s data center operations, giving a tour of the Google facility in Berkeley County, SC.
Only a small, exclusive percentage of Google’s employees have authorization to even enter a data center site in order to protect user’s information. When millions of people have personal information stored in Google apps like GMail, Google Drive and more, protecting user privacy is key. With all that personal information being stored it’s no wonder the data facilities are kept out of view.
Each data center site is equipped with the highest-caliber security features available. Security badges, iris scanners like those you’d see in a spy movie and “under-floor intrusion detection via laser beams” can all be found in a Google data center.
And Google doesn’t just use any old computer racks for its servers — each server rack is custom-designed and built, NetworkWorld reports.
Perhaps most interesting, however, is the temperature of Google’s data centers — Kava says Google keeps its data centers’ temperature around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, a bit warmer than most data centers.
“It helps with the efficiency,” Kava says in the video.
Whatever works!
And yes, the data center does have a foosball table.
Data facilities like the one Google showed off in the video allow for millions of workers to do their job effectively. Everything from professional IT services to basic customer service runs through their data center site. For obvious reasons, Google has kept the appearance of its data facilities under wraps for years. As one of the biggest data collectors in the world, the data center site is essentially a trade secret.
Data center site maintenance is a growing field for young professionals. Professional IT consulting is a growth industry as more and more companies are moving their information into the cloud. Any kind of computer outage and shut down many businesses, meaning IT professional help will always be in demand. If watching Google data center Youtube videos is your idea of a good time, a career in professional IT consulting might be right up your alley.
What does the future of data center industry hold? This industry is only expected to grow. Between 2018 and 2028, the data center technician job market is projected to grow roughly 5% and lead to 18,200 job opportunities across the country. Data center technicians earn an average of $20.68 per hour, which is over $43k a year. That’s not bad considering only about one-third of data center technicians hold a bachelor’s degree. And at Google, the average salary for a data center technical is $59k. According to Joe Kava, Google’s VP of data centers, the company’s data center team, which includes Google data center engineers, has grown more than 10-fold in the nine years he’s worked there. Google data center workers are typically “generalists” in the field, but they often have some foundational understanding of computer science, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering.
The data center sector continues to grow each day as technology and our dependence upon cloud computing increases; it’s an industry that boasts some of the lowest unemployment rates, so if you’re looking for a secure and interesting career path, then data center facilities technician jobs like those at Google may be the ideal path for you.
The Google data center tour video has inspired many to reassess how data centers work. A computer data center allows for a business to keep their functions running smoothly. A computer data center holds a company’s data offsite and accessible to those who need it. This allows an organization to collect and hold massive amounts of data without having to have an onsite server farm. The data center functions as a virtual holding pen for the information that needs to be accessed through the course of a business day.
This Google data center tour video has shown what is capable with a world class technical data center. The amount of information that passes through Google’s servers is unlike anything we have ever seen. Considering the data that is being processed, the computer data center managed by Google shows how small of a physical footprint is needed to hold a shocking amount of data. Although they released this Google data center tour video, Google is still not releasing true technical specs of their data facilities.
