There are two main kinds of blister packaging designs. One is a small plastic sheet with pouches for medicines and a foil backing, which is relatively easy to open. The other is called clam shell blister packaging, which is made by folding a dense sheet of plastic over itself to form a protective shell, and is markedly more difficult to open.
Thankfully, there’s a clever way to open difficult blister packaging. Here’s how.
Get the Right Tools.
First things first, you’re going to need a manual can opener, and a sharp cutting tool, like a pair of scissors, a knife, or a box cutter. Since you’re going to be working with such hazardous instruments, take caution. It would be pretty silly to cut yourself trying to open blister packaging, wouldn’t it?
Make the First Incision.
Take the can opener and put one side of the blister pack in it like you would a can’s edge. Then, work the can opener along it, just as you would a can, to open that one side up.
Flay It Open.
Using whatever sharp tool you’ve chosen, you want to open the other two sides connected to the one you’ve just opened. Insert the sharp part of the tool into the incision, and then work it along each unopened end carefully.
And there you have it! Now, you should be able to open your blister pack like it were a book.
Some pharma packaging services incorporate pull tabs into their clam shell blister packaging designs, which do make them easier to open, but most companies don’t. If you find yourself struggling to open a pack without tabs, then you can simply use this method to open it up.
