Springs are used in almost everything these days, or so it seems. Spring design can date back to around 1333 BC when the Tutankhamun-class chariot was first invented.This chariot included shock absorbing technology as well as springs. Custom springs can be used for many types of technology, or whatever use you wish to use them for. Medical springs are also very prominent in the U.S. There has been as estimated $38 billion revenue from just medical device manufacturing from medical springs and medical coils.
Take a look in your CD player, if you still have one, or on your digital camera, because you will also find small coiled torsion springs in those devices. They are used for the small pop up doors. These springs are made of an elastic material. This material was formed from specific types of steel alloy and other types of plastic as well as rubber.
Where else can you find springs? I can think of a few places. Spring design can take on many sizes. For example, the spring on your camera is going to be very different than the spring in your mattress. In 1871 Heinrich Westphal invented the innerspring mattress. How different would it feel to not have springs in your mattress? I can’t imagine very good–so thank you Heinrich. Springs are an ingenious technology that we don’t even really think about, but it’s there and we would notice if they were gone. Think about your car? Without springs and shock technology, I think I would be walking everywhere inside of the bumpy ride that would be my car. Even sneaker companies are implementing spring design into their running and other sports shoes for that extra support and bounce that you sometimes need while being on your feet.
