Signs have always been an important advertising tool for businesses. In fact, a business typically gets about half of its local business from its on premises signs. The thing about business signs though is that a business owner can’t just prop up an A-frame on the side of the road and call it a day. Signs need to be good. Signs need to be visible, interesting, and make people want to come inside. After all, most people will judge a business based on the signs it displays. Here are three of the worst types of sign fails that all business owners should avoid.
Burned Out Neon Letters
Neon business signs are great to have since they’re illuminated and visually interesting. Until one of the letters burns out. Not only does this look negligent on the part of the business and makes it hard for customers to recognize the brand, but it can make the sign read something different altogether. All it takes is for two letters for neon business signs that should read “DYNASTY BUFFET” to actually read “NASTY BUFFET”.
Flaws in Business Sign Design
Another sign fail to avoid is just poor design, especially of logos. A business owner should make sure that the image that she is trying to convey is easily understood and doesn’t look like something else. She should look at the positive and the negative space of the image and make sure that there are no hidden or additional unintended messages.
Mistakes
This is another one of the worst sign fails. A sign should never have misspellings or grammar mistakes. Again, this reflects badly on the business owner and can cause confusion for customers or potential customers. When designing signs for businesses, a business owner should have someone else take a second look at it to make sure that a sign for a mechanic’s shop says “FIX YOUR BRAKES” rather than “FIX YOUR BREAKS”.
